Great Divide Fresh Hop Pale Ale and Ninkasi Total Domination IPA

6.1% ABV / 55 IBUs

6.7% ABV / 65 IBUs

Getting a basement ready to homebrew is hard work that necessitates some form of refreshment. Crisp and refreshing ales are what is called for to cut through the grime and dust. To quench our thirst, Brian and I turned to a couple of beers that highlight hops without going overboard.

Great Divide’s Fresh Hop Pale Ale pours a light orange with a nice head. Grass and pine are the dominant smells while the taste tends more towards citrus and floral tones. The malt backbone is just present enough as to not raise questions of balance and with a lingering complex hop aftertaste, it is hard to share this with a friend.

Thirsty Zymurgist Score: 43/50

We warmed up with the Fresh Hop, knowing that Total Domination lives up to its name. A wonderful hop explosion with heavy citrus aroma and flavor, Ninkasi proves why they are among the fastest growing craft breweries in the states. While the hops are prevalent, there is a nice toasted caramel flavor to the initial wash. A tart aftertaste allows the hop flavors to linger on the tongue for days. Overall, this is an IPA that does not disappoint.
